The big festival in Padstow will soon be with us. Known as May Day, also called ‘Obby ‘Oss Day.
The festival takes place on May 1st, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case it’s celebrated on May 2nd. This year will be Thursday 1st May, 2025.
The event is a celebration with processions, dancing, singing, and the unique tradition of the “Obby ‘Oss”. The exact origins are uncertain, but it’s believed to have roots in ancient fertility rituals and is seen as a way to welcome spring. The town is decorated with bunting, ribbons, green sycamore branches, and locals and visitors alike join in the festivities, including the appearances of the Children’s “Oss” at 08:00 and then the “Blue Ribbon ‘Oss” (also known as the “Peace ‘Oss” from 10:00 and the “Old ‘Oss” from 11:00. A number of appearances occur throughout the day of the Oss’s, but they don’t meet until 18:00 around the May Pole.
