Winter Escapes at Trevorrick Farm Cottages: A Family-Friendly Holiday Guide

We all know that Cornwall’s unbeatable in the summer but during colder months it really turns into a wintry wonderland for families.

Winter is a magical time to visit Trevorrick Farm Cottages. Nestled in the Cornish countryside, our cozy cottages are the perfect retreat for families seeking a winter break. While the summer months bring beach days and outdoor adventures, the winter season has its own unique charm. Whether it’s festive fun, farm activities, or cozy indoor moments, there’s something here for every member of the family—even on chilly days! Here are some wonderful winter activities to make the most of your stay.

1. Fun on the Farm for Young Ones

Winter is a great time to wrap up warm and enjoy outdoor play on our huge range of play equipment, including two play houses, climbing frames, and basket swing.

We also have an unrivalled collection we believe, for a business of our size, of large size play vehicles. Including play farm shop truck, play land rover, play train, play combine harvester and play tractor.

There is a large trampoline for over sixes.

Experience the heart of our farm, and the children will love getting up close to our friendly animals.

Over the winter we have our Kune Kune pigs to watch, always a hit with little ones, our cheeky goat to feed and we also have free range ducks and chickens.

Don’t miss the chance to pet our guinea pigs; a warm cuddle with a fluffy friend is a great way to brighten a winter’s day.

From February you may be lucky to meet newly born lambs.

Top Tip: Bring wellies and waterproofs to stay comfortable on the farm. Winter in Cornwall is often mild, but there can be rain, so these essentials ensure no one misses out on the fun.

2. Cozy Evenings by the Fire

After a day exploring the farm or Cornish countryside, there’s nothing like retreating to your warm, cozy cottage. Each of our cottages is equipped with everything you need to relax, and most include wood-burning stoves or fireplaces to create that perfect winter atmosphere, whilst Curlew Cottage has a realistic flame effect electric stove. Kids will love gathering around to play board games or listen to a family story. It’s also a perfect time to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate together while planning the next day’s adventures.

3. Visit Santa’s Grottos & Christmas Markets

If you’re visiting Trevorrick Farm during December, a trip to one of the local Christmas markets or Santa’s grottos is a must! There are various festive markets with twinkling lights, festive food, and local crafts. Many venues across Cornwall host magical Santa experiences, where children can meet Father Christmas, receive a small gift, and even take a magical train ride.

Top Picks:

  • Truro Christmas market – Every day on Lemon Quay from 22 Novemberr to 24 December.  Perfect for seasonal cheer and delicious treats.
  • Bodmin & Wenford Railway – Hop on the Santa Express for a memorable journey through the Cornish countryside.

4. Explore Cornish Winter Wildlife

Winter is an ideal time to explore the wildlife Cornwall has to offer. Pack some binoculars and take the kids on a nature walk! The Camel Trail, just a stunning walk or short drive away, is a scenic and family-friendly path that is ideal for winter walks. You might spot migrating birds or even the occasional seal near the coast. The trail is flat and suitable for buggies, scooters and pedal bikes, making it accessible for all ages.

Tip: Don’t forget your camera—winter light over the estuary can create stunning photo opportunities, especially at sunrise or sunset!

5. Eden Project: Winter Wonder

A visit to Cornwall wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Eden Project. The indoor biomes mean you can escape any chilly weather, and during the winter months, Eden transforms into a winter wonderland with a seasonal ice skating rink. Both children and adults can enjoy this fun winter activity, and there are plenty of festive workshops and nature trails to explore. Be sure to book tickets in advance, especially for ice skating sessions, as they fill up quickly in the holiday season.

6. Local Indoor Attractions for Rainy Days

If winter brings a rainy day, Cornwall has many family-friendly indoor attractions. The National Maritime Museum in Falmouth is a favorite, with interactive exhibits and fascinating displays about Cornwall’s rich maritime history. Another excellent choice is the Blue Reef Aquarium in Newquay, where kids can marvel at vibrant marine life and even watch daily feeding sessions.

7. Winter Beach Adventures

Cornwall’s beaches are beautiful all year round, and winter is a magical time to visit. Bundle up and head to Trevone Bay, or one of the many wonderful sandy beaches of the north coast, for a family walk. Kids will love collecting seashells, exploring rock pools, and breathing in the fresh sea air. The beaches are less crowded, giving your family space to roam, and winter storms can bring impressive waves—perfect for budding photographers and adventurers alike.

Bonus: Remember to stop by a nearby café afterward for a warm Cornish pasty or some local hot chocolate!

8. Coastal Villages and Cornish Heritage

Cornwall’s charming villages, like Padstow and Port Isaac, have a quieter, more relaxed feel during the winter. Stroll through quaint streets, visit local shops, and treat the family to fish and chips by the harbor. Padstow’s historic buildings and harbor lights make it feel like a scene from a storybook, especially as the Christmas lights twinkle in the early evening.

A Walk Around The Creek

There’s a stunning walk or bike ride from Padstow along the Camel Estuary. It’s incredibly family friendly and takes in some of our favourite views of this beautiful part of Cornwall. Come join us for a photo tour before you tackle the real thing!

Beach Clean – Mawgan Porth

We love living so close to the incredible Cornish coastline. Along with all the joy we take from being beside the sea, we recognise our responsibility to keep those sandy stretches as pristine for the next visitors. We’re always keen to get involved in a Beach Guardian beach clean.

Hen’s Eggs

Cornwall is home to some beautiful craftwork and incredibly talented craftspeople, perfect to find a memento of your time here in Kernow. I found this unusual egg holder near to Cotehele and it never fails to remind me of the story from the potter who made it and how it evokes such strong childhood memories.
